Prefecture of Ioannina
The Prefecture of Ioannina, is the northeast part of the Epirus Region. It is the third biggest prefecture nationwide, and it covers 54% of the Epirus area. It covers 3,8% of the Greek land. The total area of the Prefecture is 4.999 klmē of which 3,5% is flat land, 11,5% is semi-mountainous and 85% is mountainous! According to the 1991 census, the population is 158.193 inhabitants. The capital of the Prefecture is Ioannina. The geomorphology an the climate of the region have contributed significantly in the economic development of the Prefecture. The entrepreneurial activities are concentrated mainly on the field of stock -farming, with emphasis in the sheep, goat, pig breeding and the poultry farming, marble, cheese farming, wood, water bottling, concrete and silversmith. Based on the human needs of the prefecture the cultivation of other products such as potatoes, tobacco and grapes are significant.
